Fundation's Practice
A new spelling word packet has been sent home filled with suggested activities to do at home to practice the Fundation Skills taught each week. Your child will be filling out their Fundation Journal in class each day filled with the skill's rule and words we have been learning how to decode or map out. Please ask your child to explain this to you. This will put the ownership onto them to explain what they learned and encourage them to explain why they decoded the word as they did. Have them be the "teacher" for you :-).
For each unit a letter will be sent home in Tuesday Folders explaining the unit's skills. Please remember that the spelling activities are all optional! If you choose to practice the skill a different way or not at all will be a family choice.
I will be checking off each morning in their Fundation's journal if your child has completed a homework task, however I will not be grading it. Homework is considered practice only and cannot be applied to final grades. If your child does an activity that cannot be shown through their journal please write a brief note explaining what you did together and I will be happy to sign off with a star under your note.
Please be creative and make it fun practicing the skills and always search for these skills when reading together!
Homework will be sent home as needed in a colored folder marked HOMEWORK. Homework will not be assigned on Fridays. I believe the weekend should be for fun and family! The completed homework assignments and folder must be returned the morning after the homework was assigned. Language Arts, Math, and occasionally other homework requirements will be sent home when an objective needs more support or practice.
What if homework is incomplete? If by chance homework is not completed for the following day students will be asked to complete the assignment the following night. If homework is not brought back the following day, students will be asked to place a new copy of the assignment into their folder, which increases their homework expectations for that evening. If homework could not be completed due to family obligations, please send in a note with a brief explanation.
What if homework is done but my child forgot to bring it to school? If homework is forgotten, students will be verbally reminded to bring back their completed assignments the next morning. A reminder note may be placed in their folder. If homework is not brought back the following due date, students will be asked to place a new copy of the assignment into their folder, which increases their homework expectations for that evening.
What if homework is poor quality? If homework is unacceptable (messy or illegible) it will be either sent home to redo along with a note explaining reasons why, or students will be given a clean copy of the assignment and asked to redo their work during a working lunch time. Quality work for all assignments is an important expectation in 2nd grade. J Please no ball point pens or markers.
What if homework is missed? When homework is missed due to absences a “We Missed You” folder will be placed on their desks. As assignments are given throughout the day they will be added to the folder. Your child will find missed work on their desk the day they return. Every day your child is absent they will have the same amount of time to make up the work at home. For example: If they are absent Monday and Tuesday, they will have Wednesday and Thursday to make up work and it will be due on that Friday.
I thank you so much for your support with homework policies and assisting your student with returning completed quality assignments.

- Language Arts homework will change throughout the school year as we progress with our mini lessons and guided groups in class. During the first few weeks of school we will be spending time discussing how to pick out a book just right for individual reading levels, and how to check out books from within our classroom. As a class we will then discuss what a serious reader looks like and sounds like. These discussions in class will prepare second graders on how to use their Reading Journals for homework. Reading 20 minutes nightly is highly recommended in second grade. Nightly reading not only supports reading achievement and the joy of reading, but also encourages personal responsibility. Later in the year students may be asked to record responses in their journals after being asked to read a chapter. Take this special time with your child to talk about the book and ask questions about the story. By accomplishing this every evening it will greatly increase their comprehension success in school.
- Math homework will support lessons and objectives taught in class. If you find your child is struggling with a certain math concept please contact me for suggested home activities.
- Word Work/Grammar homework may be coming home occasionally. Students may occasionally be asked to write the new rule being discussed along with a list of words to be used at home for homework assignments. Assignments may require students to write sentences using the words or find them in a book. Please have notebook paper at home for students to complete assignments. Students may tear out each page and return it to school the following morning in their homework folders.
